International Event Rider
Phillip Dutton was born in Nyngan, New South Wales, Australia, and spent his childhood competing in Pony Club. He attended Newington College and Agricultural College and continued to ride competitively. In 1991, he decided to move to the United States to train in a more internationally competitive environment and to prepare for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
There and at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, he was a member of Australia’s gold-medal Three-day Eventing Team. He represented Australia in three Olympics and four World Equestrian Games before becoming an American citizen in 2006.
In his letter to the EFA, informing them of the change, Phillip wrote, “I would like to thank the EFA for everything they have done for me and my career as a Three-Day Event rider… It has been an honour to be a member of the EFA and to represent Australia internationally for the past 12 years.”
Since that time, he has remained a steadfast presence on the U.S. eventing circuit, winning the USEA Leading Rider of the Year title in 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012. In 2005 he was named the number one FEI World Event Rider. He rode on his first U.S. team in 2007 at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, where he won team gold and individual silver. He went on to compete at the 2008 Beijing Olympics with Connaught and was on the World Equestrian Games team in 2010 and on the 2012 London Olympics team. He won his first individual Olympic medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games with Mighty Nice.
Phillip and his wife, Evie, live in Avondale, Pennsylvania with Evie’s daughter and their twin girls. Dutton’s farm, True Prospect Farm, is located in West Grove, Pennsylvania. Dutton continues to be a cornerstone of American eventing, bringing experience, resilience, and a relentless competitive spirit. His ability to produce horses to 5* level, maintain a presence at the top of the sport, and contribute to team and individual medals make him one of the most decorated and respected riders in eventing history.
